How ratings work on TetraReviews

Every rating on TetraReviews comes from reviews written by registered users. Here is how reviews get on the site, how scores are calculated and what companies can and cannot do.

Who can write a review

  • Anyone with a confirmed TetraReviews account can review a company they have dealt with.
  • A review must describe the author's own, real experience. Every review shows the date of that experience.
  • Company owners cannot review their own company.
  • Reviews must not be bought or rewarded: fake and incentivised reviews break our guidelines.

How reviews are published and moderated

  • Reviews appear on the site right after they are submitted.
  • Our team hides reviews that break the guidelines, for example fake or abusive reviews, reviews about something else, or reviews that publish personal data.
  • Signed-in users can mark a review as useful.

What companies can do

  • Companies can reply publicly to reviews. The reply is shown under the review.
  • A company can ask us to remove a review. We remove it only if it breaks our guidelines; a negative opinion alone is not a reason to remove a review.
  • Companies cannot pay to change their rating or to hide reviews.

Paid features

  • Business plans give companies tools such as review replies, analytics and a rating widget for their website.
  • "Featured" companies are paid placements: they are shown first in lists and carry a "Featured" label.
  • Paid features never change a company's rating or which reviews are shown.

What the rating words mean

  • 4.3 – 5.0
    Excellent
  • 3.8 – 4.2
    Great
  • 2.8 – 3.7
    Average
  • 1.8 – 2.7
    Poor
  • 1.0 – 1.7
    Bad

The rating of a company is the plain average of all its published reviews, rounded to one decimal. In "Top rated" lists a company is ranked as if it also had 5 reviews at the site-wide average (4.7), so one or two reviews cannot put a company above companies with many consistent reviews.

Frequently asked questions

The rating is the average of the star ratings (1 to 5) of all published reviews of the company, rounded to one decimal. Every review counts the same.

In "Top rated" lists we take the number of reviews into account: a company is ranked as if it also had a few reviews at the site-wide average. A company with one 5-star review therefore does not outrank a company with many consistently good reviews. The rating shown on the company page is still the plain average.

They describe the average rating: Excellent is 4.3 to 5.0, Great 3.8 to 4.2, Average 2.8 to 3.7, Poor 1.8 to 2.7 and Bad 1.0 to 1.7.

No. Companies cannot pay to change their rating or to remove reviews. A review is removed only if it breaks our guidelines, whoever asks for it.

Anyone with a confirmed account who has dealt with the company. The review must describe your own, real experience. Company owners cannot review their own company.

Featured is a paid placement. Featured companies are shown first in lists and marked with a "Featured" label. It does not change their rating or their reviews.
